sammy

Believe me, the day you'll be old enough to go off on an adventure by yourself will be sooner than you expect. And confronting a giant squid is no game. Sammy and I were very lucky to survive that day.

—Ray to Ricky, "Like a Grownup"

Ray is a leatherback turtle who's Rita's partner/mate and Ricky's grandfather. He's the childhood best friend of Sammy and he serves as the second-in-command of the reef village located at the Southern Seas.

Appearance

Ray is a large-sized gray leatherback turtle with green eyes.

Personality

In contrast to his best friend Sammy, Ray is more fun-loving and good-humored. He is an incorrigible chatterbox, tireless game-player, and maddening bragger who is constantly recounting and exaggerating his past exploits.[4] After years of traveling around the world for more than the first two decades of his life, Ray serves as Sammy's second-in-command at the reef village after he and his clan found it as a safe home for his family and his friends. But that doesn't stop Ray from continuing to boast to the youth of the reef village about his adventures and he tends to exaggerate his stories to make himself look good. He also enjoys having fun and playing games since he still has the energy and spirit that remain inside him from his youth.

But despite his fun-loving nature, Ray is a well-meaning grandparent who would discipline his grandson Ricky or calls him out on disobedient and troubling behavior. He is brave, strong, and patient, especially towards Ricky since he inherits his fiery spirit. Ray is also protective of the inhabitants residing in the village because of many dangers outside the reef, especially from Big Boss and his henchmen who're trying to conquer the village multiple times. Also like other members of his species he has a rather large appetite.

Relationships

Sammy

Sammy and Ray have known each other one day after they were born, as seen in the flashback from A Turtle's Tale: Sammy's Adventures. Ray was searching for a seaweed raft to travel with the other turtles to begin his life journey, but only to get harassed by a bale of loggerhead hatchlings who want him to get off their seaweed raft to prevent him from eating all their food. Feeling upset that he doesn’t fit in with the loggerheads and that they want to get rid of him, Ray gets back into the water and meets Sammy after he accidentally hurts his head when he bumps into Sammy’s raft. The two hatchlings introduce each other and discover that because they were both born on the same beach on the same day, they form a life-long friendship and start seeing each other as brothers. Ray is welcomed onto Sammy’s raft and together, the newly-formed best friends start traveling around the Pacific Ocean together. After a decade has passed, Ray and Sammy are still best friends during their journey. However, the two were later accidentally separated when Sammy was accidentally captured by a large fishing net and when Ray tried to rescue him, he got captured by a different net as well. The two best friends got separated when the net they got caught in had risen up and Ray got carried away from Sammy from a different ship. It wasn't until many years later after Sammy was released from the Monterey Animal Rescue Center that Ray was finally reunited with his best friend when the two are fully grown adults. Ray was trapped in a refrigerated trailer and he asks two female leatherbacks to find someone who could help them get him out. The female leatherbacks conveniently happened to come across Sammy and asks him for their help to rescue Ray. Ray and Sammy are happily reunited and after his best friend helped rescue him, Ray returns the favor by taking Sammy to a shipwreck to help him search for Shelly. After a misunderstanding when Sammy mistakenly assumed Shelly has a mate after seeing a male turtle flirting with her which is turn out to be Robbie who already has a mate but he chooses to continue flirting with other female turtles, Ray decides to help his best friend win Shelly's heart after Sammy became worried that she won’t love him again after what happened at the Panama Canal. Ray tells him his plan about a grand entrance to get Sammy and Shelly to reunite again with help from a friendly toothless shark named Albert by staging a fake heroic rescue. But while the ruse is later exposed, Ray does manage to help Sammy realizes Shelly loves the latter for who he is and the two green turtles become a couple. Ray even planned out the wedding between the couple and officiates the two as a married couple.

Since then, Sammy and Ray are still best friends for over fifty years and after the events of A Turtle's Tale 2: Sammy's Escape from Paradise, the two best friends continue their journey with their newly-formed clan from the formerly-imprisoned inhabitants of the large aquarium to find a place to settle down together. It wasn't until the clan all finally found the reef village and set up home there. Together, Sammy and Ray also form a community within the reef and established the reef village council to maintenance the peace since there're dangers and predators everywhere in the big ocean and they found the village to be a safe place to live. And despite their different personalities, Sammy and Ray continue to stay being friends while raising one of their respective grandchildren at the reef.

However, a disagreement between Sammy and Ray over whether or not they should let Ricky and Ella keep Niko at the reef caused their friendship to be temporarily split apart in "A Divided Reef" because of their different personalities clashing with each other. Ray wants the shark pup to stay at the reef as a play companion to the kids after seeing how much fun Ricky has with Niko, so he was very upset about Sammy's overly protective nature and uptight demeanor as well as wanting the kids to get rid of the shark pup because he's worried that the kids would get themselves hurt despite Ricky and Ella both only playing around since they're still kids. Having enough of Sammy's uptightness, Ray ends his five-decade-long friendship with Sammy and divides the reef in half with Ray's side being a place where the reef inhabitants can play and have fun while Sammy's side being a place if they have to be well-behaved and reasonable. It wasn't until Ricky and Ella both manage to restore the friendship between their two respective grandfathers at the end of the episode that the two reunited best friends both forgive each other and learn that they should accept both "a little bit of wisdom and a little bit of wildness" to solve all their problems.

Rita

Rita is Ray's loving wife whom he met at some point after he and Sammy were accidentally separated by a fishing boat during their youth. And despite Ray's fun-loving personality clashing with Rita's sass and level-headed attitude, the couple still loves each other and they both currently raise one of their grandsons Ricky together at the reef village. Ray even affectionately calls his wife his "little sugar clam". When they are getting ready for their anniversary in "Love Makes You Blind", he stresses about how he looks, and the couple embraced each other after Rita teams up with Shelly, John, Lulu, Ricky, and Ella to rescue him and Sammy from a fishing boat in "Grandmas to the Rescue". It's unknown how exactly Ray and Rita met since Ray's story to Ricky is that he rescued her from being "imprisoned in a fishing net" and what he said may or may not be an exaggeration.

Ricky

Out of Ray's many grandchildren, Ricky is very special to him. The little leatherback was born on an island in A Turtle's Tale 2: Sammy's Escape from Paradise and despite he was only a newborn hatchling, Ricky inherited Ray's bravery and curiosity from his youth and he manages to travel all the way to the Tank along with Sammy's granddaughter Ella to rescue their respective grandfathers after the two best friends were captured by poachers to make them becoming an exhibit at the Tank. Ray is very proud of Ricky and Ella for bravely coming all the way to the large fish aquarium to rescue him and Sammy despite the many dangers the hatchlings encountered and they were only a few days old after their birth when they began their rescue journey. After the events of the sequel film when the clan all found the reef village, Ray and Rita are both raising Ricky so they could teach him about the danger of the ocean as well as keeping him safe from the many predators outside the reef. And despite Ray's fun-loving side, he is still a responsible grandparent who will become stern and straightforward with Ricky when he is acting poorly or disobedient, punishing him at the most.

When Ricky runs away from home to continue his journey on his own in "Like a Grownup", Ray is openly worried about his grandson in danger outside the reef that he's willing to take part in Sammy's plan to get Ricky to find out for himself that he's still too little to be outside the reef all by himself without anyone around to protect him. This is because Ray and Sammy both lack any parental figure in their youth and they only manage to survive traveling alone together in the ocean where they have to use their natural instincts so they could learn how they should fend for themselves. And since Ray nor Sammy have any parents nor siblings around throughout their life, they have to raise one of their respective grandchildren to teach them about the dangers of the ocean and keep them safe.

When Ray is determined to leave the reef forever when he assumes his constant boasting have nearly put the children in danger because of a barracuda in "The Big Departure", it is his love and protectiveness of Ricky that manages to change his mind and gets his self-confidence back that he returns to the village to continue raising Ricky.

Big Boss

Overall, Big Boss is Ray's sworn enemy. When Sammy and Ray are taken to the large aquarium with Lulu and Jimbo in A Turtle's Tale 2: Sammy's Escape from Paradise, they all met Big Boss who's the tyrannical dictator of the Tank. And because of Big Boss's hostility to the two turtles and have tried to kill them when they refused to follow his orders, Ray and Sammy both take an immediate hatred towards him that the two best friends want to help the sea creatures escape from both the Tank and his tyranny. In fact, they even both trapped Big Boss into a fishbowl as a punishment for his cruelty to the inhabitants before the sea creatures all escape from the Tank near the end of the film. Ever since Big Boss escaped from the fishbowl, Ray and Sammy both have to do whatever they can to protect the reef village from being conquered by him because of his revenge to regain his leader status by overthrowing Sammy.

John

Ray met John while the former and Sammy are shepherding the birth of their grandchildren in A Turtle's Tale 2: Sammy's Escape from Paradise and the two were initially enemies. After he caught John trying to eat up the hatchlings while they're on their way to the ocean, Ray and Sammy both steps in to fight John and his seagull flock to protect the grandchildren. However, when a group of poachers arrived and captured Sammy, Ray, Ricky, and Ella, they accidentally caught John as well when they throw a net at them. While caught, the two best friends have helped John escape from the net despite their hostility to the seagull, but it is their act of kindnesses that make John returns their favor by distracting the fishermen long enough to get Ricky and Ella out of the boat and safely in the water. Since then, Ray happily views John as one of his friends after John made a promise to never eat any of his family and friends ever again as a result of Sammy and Ray kindly rescuing him from the poachers. So when he mistakenly assumes John betrays his promise in "John the Terrible" because of a misunderstanding from Pipo, Ray can be seen holding a stick so he can be ready to beat up John while he and Sammy are on the island to rescue Ricky and Ella.

Albert

Ray and Albert have known each other during their youth at some point after Ray was separated from Sammy and before Ray met Rita. In A Turtle's Tale: Sammy's Adventures, Ray recruited Albert to help him with his plan to get Sammy and Shelly together by pretending to be a menacing shark who chases after Shelly before Sammy arrives to "rescue" her.

Lulu

Ray and Sammy both met Lulu after the two were captured by a group of poachers in A Turtle's Tale 2: Sammy's Escape from Paradise and they were placed inside a tub from a fishing boat. Despite being initially weird-out by Lulu's dissociative identity disorder because of his habit of talking to his pincers, Ray and Sammy become friends with the lobster and together, the three work together to free the other captive sea creatures from the large fish aquarium they're held in and escape from Big D's tyranny. After the events of the sequel film, Ray entrusts Lulu to teach the children of the reef about the danger of the ocean as well as looking after them, especially to Ricky.

Slim

Slim was an old friend of Ray whom he met when he and Sammy traveled to the Tasman Sea during their youth. While Sammy was asleep, Ray was exploring the sea where he encountered Slim and immediately befriends him after seeing that Slim is a "cool old octopus". After Ray wakes Sammy up and brought him along to meet Slim, the two best friends start to have fun with the old octopus by hanging onto his tentacles while Slim spins around like a carousel. Ray has a great time playing with Slim, but the fun ends abruptly when an oil tanker gets shipwrecked near them which caused a large amount of oil from their ship to get dumped into the ocean and contaminates their surroundings. Ray was curious about the oil and asked Slim if he ever seen anything like it, to which Slim said that the oil is coming from the ship above them. Slim warns the two turtles that they should get out of the Tasman Sea immediately since it's not safe for them to stay there for too long. Ray is worried when Slim doesn't join them and prefers to stay where he is despite the oil contaminating his home and asks him if he'll be okay, but Slim assures him that he'll be fine before wishing him and Sammy luck on their journey.
