Scene: Palaver tree. The villagers are gathered up for the birthday party.
Billy: Spending the day with my mother-in-law? What kind of birthday present is that?
(The villagers all laugh)
Ray: Good old Billy. That joke gets me every time.
Annabel: I didn't get it.
Ella: Huh? Huh?
Pipo: Showing late for your own birthday party? Only Ricky could do a thing like that.
Annabel: Maybe he's afraid of failing the shell ceremony.
Sammy: When a turtle celebrates his eighth birthday, we test his shell to see if it has become solid enough. (pounds on Ray's shell) And if that's the case...
Ella: You're entrusted with responsibilities, and you can do all kinds of new things, like going outside the reef on your own, hunting by yourself.
Annabel: But we already do all that.
Sammy: Huh?
(Sammy and Ray both laugh)
Ray: So then, from now on, no more need to do all that in secret.
Ella: Grandpa, we'll go find him. I can hardly wait.
(The kids all swim away)
Billy: Hey, do you know the one about the turtle without a shell, hmm?
Scene: Reef village. The kids are searching for Ricky.
(The kids search in Ray's habitat, the playground, and have asked the crab workers, but they didn't find Ricky)
Crabs: Happy birthday!
(The kids have also asked Mika, but she didn't see Ricky either. They swim to the exit of the reef)
Pipo: He's nowhere inside the reef.
Ella: I think I understand. Seeing as we were born on the same day, Ricky and I always give each other birthday gifts. It's become kind of like a game. We always try to surprise one another.
(Flashback begins, at the Playground)
Ricky: Me, first. This year your gift will be very special and surprising. It'll be higher than ever before.
Ella: Higher?
Ricky: You'll never guess.
(Flashback ends)
Pipo: So you think your gift situated outside the reef?
Ella: I wouldn't be surprised. Ricky always tries to outdo himself.
(The Rockfish all swim out of the exit)
Annabel: Hi there, guys. You wouldn't happen to have seen Ricky, have you?
Glitz: Of course we did, but you better hurry up. He was swimming real fast.
(Glitz and Crudd both swim away)
Babbles: Uh, happy birthday, Ella.
Ella: Thanks, Babbles.
Glitz: Babbles, come on!
Babbles: Huh? (He sighs and follows Glitz and Crudd) But we never saw Ricky.
Glitz: Oops, guess I must have confused him with a slowpoke sea snail. (laughs)
(Babbles sighs as he watches Ella, Pipo, and Annabel swim to the entranceways)
Scene: Outside the reef.
Pipo: Uh, couldn't we just wait for him to come back? (Ella and Annabel both look at him) Mm, okay.
(The kids all see Big Boss, Marco, and Philippe, and they hide nearby)
Big Boss: During that silly birthday ceremony, nobody will be paying any attention to the reef. On the scorp-fish's signal, we sneak inside and take possession of it once and for all.
(The kids all come out of hiding spot and swim past Big Boss, Marco, and Philippe)
Ella: Hello, Big Boss. What a great plan.
Big Boss: Uh, thanks, uh... You bunch of numbskulls. You got the date wrong! If it's her birthday today, then what's she doing here, huh?
Marco: But, boss, it's the scorp-fish who told us.
Big Boss: That's enough. We're going back. We've got to come up with another plan.
Scene: Reef village. On the island, Ricky had talked to John about a plan of his and he dives back down to the reef.
Rita: Oh, there he is.
Ricky: Sorry I'm late. Huh? Hmm? Do you know where Ella is? I have a surprise for her.
Sammy: No. As a matter of fact, she went looking for you with Pipo and Annabel.
Ricky: Don't panic. I'll go find them. They surely can't be far.
Ray: Well, looks like we won't be starting the ceremony anytime soon.
(Ricky looks inside Sammy's habitat and the playground, but he didn't see his friends)
Ricky: Now where could they have gone? (swims to where the crab workers are) Ella? (a crab points to the entranceways) Annabel? Pipo?
Crabs: Happy birthday!
(Ricky is about to ask the Rockfish, but they swim away from him. He swims to Albert's den)
Alpha: I hope we haven't missed the beginning of the ceremony. Albert's taking forever to get ready.
Ricky: No, no, rest assured it hasn't begun yet. But it's my fault. Since I was late, Ella and the others went off looking for me, and now I'm the one looking for them.
Alpha: But if everybody goes off looking for each other, nobody's going to find anybody.
Ricky: Not if you come with me. I need the best pilot fish around to help me find them.
Alpha: Okay, follow me.
(Alpha sniffs on a rock and finds Ricky's friends' scents. Alpha points at the entranceways)
Scene: Shark's den. The kids are hiding inside the skeleton.
Pipo: You really think Ricky came this far away from the reef?
Ella: You're right, Pipo. He's probably already returned to the reef. Let's go back.
(The kids all swim away from the den, but they stop when they see two hammerhead sharks)
Pipo: Whoa!
Ella: Aah! Excuse us, Mr. Sharks, but today's my birthday, and they're all waiting for us to celebrate. So if you would be so kind as to let us through?
(The sharks both laugh and they chase after the kids)
Scene: Outside the reef.
Ricky: It's all my fault. I went overboard on my gift. Ella wanted to compete with me. I'll bet you anything she went outside the reef to find something incredible to give me.
(Flashback begins, at the Playground)
Ella: Well, my gift will be a whole lot faster than yours.
(Flashback ends)
(Alpha sniffs something)
Alpha: Huh? They've headed towards the sharks' den.
Ricky: Faster than mine? Fast like a shark? Don't tell me she went to find a shark's tooth. Alpha, we really have to hurry.
Scene: Shark's den. The kids are still being chased by the sharks.
(Ricky and Alpha both arrive)
Ricky: Ella!
Ella: (to Pipo and Annabel) Quick, let's hide!
(Pipo and Ella hide underneath Annabel as she camouflages herself)
Shark: Huh?
(When the shark doesn't see the kids, he swims away. The kids all swim away and hide)
Alpha: Don't worry. The sharks all know who I am. Do like I do.
Ricky: Are you sure of yourself here?
(Alpha and Ricky swim past the two sharks)
Sharks: Huh? Hmm?
(Alpha and Ricky swim down to the rift)
Ella: This way!
(Alpha and Ricky both see Ella, Pipo, and Annabel all hiding nearby)
Ricky: Did you come here to find me a shark's tooth?
Ella: No, silly. I came to find you. I thought that-- it doesn't matter.
Ricky: Well, if it's not a tooth, then what's my birthday present?
Pipo: Say there, is this really the time?
(Ricky and Ella both laugh)
Ricky: You're right, Pipo. First we're going to try and get us out of here.
Scene: Palaver tree. The villagers are all still waiting for the kids.
Ray: All right, how about one last one, then?
Billy: Sorry, Ray, but I'm all out of jokes.
Ray: (sighs) Well, why don't we just dig in? Maybe then they'll show up.
(Albert arrives)
Albert: Say there, have you seen Alpha? He went off with Ricky looking for the children, and he still hasn't come back yet. I'm worried.
(Nearby, Babbles is watching the villagers)
Sammy: I bet they'll be here any second now.
(Babbles swims out of his hiding place)
Babbles: Sammy, I know where they are. I saw them leave the reef.
Sammy: Huh?
Lulu: There's no time to lose. Everybody get into formation. Let's go!
Sammy: Yeah, it'll be easier to find them that way.
(The villagers all swim to the entranceways)
Scene: Shark's den. The kids and Alpha are all still hiding from the sharks.
Ricky: We're not going to spend the whole day hiding here, what's more on our birthday. (Annabel starts laughing) Huh? You think that's funny?
Annabel: No, I'm just ticklish, that's all.
(Suddenly, a giant squid appears tickling Annabel)
Pipo: Giant squid!
Ricky: Huh?
(The kids all scream as they swim away from the squid)
The kids: Aah! (They all swim to the shark's den) Huh?
(The two sharks are swimming to them)
Alpha: This time my technique to shake them off won't work. There are too many of us.
Ella: Do you guys remember that time we swam with the dolphins?
(A flashback of "A Pretend Fight" is briefly seen)
Pipo: Yeah, but this time it's sharks, not dolphins.
(The giant squid appears behind the kids)
Ricky: Oh, we have no other choice.
(The kids all swim to the sharks and dodges them, causing the sharks to bite on the squid's tentacles and attack them)
Alpha: Shall we go, children? I do believe we have a double birthday to celebrate.
(The kids and Alpha all swim back to the reef)
Ricky: Yay! I bet you anything my shell is harder than yours is.
Scene: Reef village.
Ella: We'll just see about that.
Annabel: Aw, I sure wish I had a shell, too. (laughs)
(The kids and Alpha all swim to the palaver tree, but the villagers are not there)
Ricky: Hey, where'd they all go?
Pipo: Where'd they all go?
Ricky: I'll bet you anything they want to surprise us. They're going to spring out of nowhere any second now.
Ella: Something's not quite right.
(The kids all see Jimbo sleeping)
The kids and Alpha: Jimbo! Jimbo! Jimbo! Jimbo!
(Jimbo wakes up)
Jimbo: Huh? What? Are you completely crazy?
Annabel: Sorry. You totally looked you were dead. You get us every time.
Jimbo: Yeah, well, if we hadn't been waiting for you for hours, I wouldn't have fall asleep. I guess they finally found you. Where were you?
Ella: Oh, no. Don't tell me everybody went looking for us.
Pipo: And what if they come across the giant squid and the sharks?
Ricky: We've got to go back.
Alpha: I told you if everybody went off looking for one another, nobody would find anybody.
Sammy: Nobody's looking for anybody anymore.
(The kids turn around and see that the villagers all return)
Ricky and Ella: Grandpa! Grandma!
(The kids all swim to their respective parents. Arthur hugs Annabel)
Arthur: My son.
Margaret: Aww...
(Margaret grabs Annabel and hugs her. She also pushes Pipo to his father. Sammy and Ray both hug their respective grandchild)
Sammy: But where in the world were you?
Ray: Uh, Sammy, how about we let the party begin?
(Later, Sammy uses a hammer and hits Ella's shell to test its solidity)
Sammy: Hmm.
(The villagers all cheer and clap)
Ella: Hmm?
Sammy: Mm-hmm.
(Ella hugs Sammy's face before she swims away. Next, it's Ricky's turn)
Ricky: Hang on. I don't know if... (Ella nods at him, assuring him that he'll be okay)
(Sammy hits Ricky's shell and it's still solid)
Ricky: Yeah! Whoo-hoo! Yeah!
(Later that day, Ella swims to Lulu at the shell school)
Ella: Thank you, Mr. Lulu. It's thanks to you that I've learned so much this year.
Lulu: Don't mention it, little one. This is so moving.
Ricky: Psst, Ella.
Lulu: All this is thanks to you, my faithful pincers.
Ella: Always a pleasure and at your service, Mr. Lulu.
(Ricky and Ella both swim up to the surface)
Scene: Island.
Ricky: I don't want to sound impatient, but...
Ricky and Ella: It's time for presents!
Ella: Shall we tell one another on three?
Ricky: Mm-hmm.
Ella: One, two...
(John arrives)
John: On three, that's right. You both offered each other the exact same gift without even knowing it.
Ricky: Huh?
Ella: Why, of course. Higher.
Ricky: And faster.
John: Yes, Ricky, you came by to ask me just after Ella did. I pretended she never did, of course. All right, then, who's up for a flight over the reef?
(John picks up Ricky and Ella and places them on his back)
Ricky and Ella: Yay!
(John starts flying above the island)
Ella: Happy birthday, Ricky.
Ricky: Happy birthday, Ella.
Ella: Whoo!
Ricky: Whoa!
John: (laughs) I wish I could see your faces now.
(Ricky, Ella, and John all laugh)
